Latest ICT innovations depend on IPv6

[Singapore - Monday, 14 June 2010]

Amidst the wealth of technological innovation showcased at CommunicAsia 2010, it is clear that IPv6 transition is arriving at an ideal time. These exciting ICT developments, including FTTx, IPTV, Mobile Broadband, NGN, and Wireless Technologies such as WiMAX.

These technologies would not be possible without the Internet, and more specifically, the globally unique identifying numbers known as IP addresses.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) free pool of IPv4 addresses is expected to run out in mid-2011. IPv6 is the new protocol developed to ensure the continued growth of the Internet. A large amount of IPv6 address space has already been distributed to networks globally, with many service and content providers already deploying IPv6 within their infrastructures.

Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) Director General Paul Wilson said CommunicAsia is a great opportunity to speak with vendors across the region.  "Each year, we get a feeling for what will be possible during the following year in terms of technological advances that will benefit Internet users across the Asia Pacific,
"It's also important to remember that a major expansion of the Internet is required for much of these innovations to come to fruition, which is the benefit of worldwide adoption of IPv6," Mr Wilson said.

APNIC, APIA, and DotAsia Organisation at CommunicAsia 2010, Singapore

APNIC's stand partners at CommunicAsia 2010 are DotAsia Organisation (DotAsia) and the Asia & Pacific Internet Association (APIA). DotAsia has played a major part in the establishment and funding of several Asia Pacific Community Projects, including the co-sponsorship of the highly successful Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF) grant program.

DotAsia Vice President of Community Relations Ching Chiao said that fostering community development is critical during this time of transition. "We are happy that this year more and more SMEs and individuals have adopted the .asia web identity," Mr Chiao said.

To encourage local uptake of the domain, DotAsia along with local partners Singapore Network Information Centre Pte Ltd (SGNIC), and Web Commerce Communications Limited (WebNIC) are offering a special bundle for domain names The special bundle of "1 .ASIA + 1 .SG" will retail at up to US$20 via WebNIC, a .SG and .ASIA accredited registrar.

"This year at CommunicAsia we are also showcasing our community projects, which are driven by every registered .asia domain. This enables us to give back to the community we serve, and this should make many .asia owners proud," Mr Chiao said.

ISIF is a small grants program aimed at supporting technological ingenuity and developing Internet communities in the Asia Pacific region.

APNIC is holding consultations with CommunicAsia attendees who wish discuss any concerns or issues associated with networking or the transition to IPv6. Consultations will be held in multiple languages at different times during the event.

Priority for Existing Alphanumeric .Asia Domain Registrants for Corresponding IDNs Considered

18 November 2009 - Hong Kong - DotAsia announces plan to release multilingual domain (IDN - Internationalized Domain Name) registrations in 2010.  Following announcements by ICANN to approve the use of Internationalized Domain Names (IDN), DotAsia Organisation, the global top-level domain authority for ".Asia", will accept IDN registrations starting in the second half of 2010 to address the pent up demand in Asia for multilingual web addresses.

IDN Internationalized Domain Names

"Asia is one of the most important regions for IDN.  Asia is already the largest Internet marketplace with over 700 million users online.  However, that represents only 18.5% penetration.  IDN will bring the Internet to the rest of the people in Asia who do not speak English," said Edmon Chung, CEO of DotAsia. "Small and Medium sized Enterprises around the world will benefit from IDN deployment.  Local SMEs in Asia can leverage their existing brand in their native language to build their online presence with an IDN, while global SMEs can become more Asian-friendly by adopting an Asian IDN as their web address."

There are about 180 million domain names registered today, representing an estimated US$10 billion annual market, including secondary market and value added services.  Much of this is currently concentrated in the US and Europe.  With IDN, users and businesses in Asia will much better recognize the investment value of domain names because of the ability to represent offline identities and concepts online in their native languages.  The deployment of IDN has the potential to dramatically expand the domain market in Asia.

DotAsia announces the launch of FreeB.Asia program (http://www.freeb.asia).  Starting this month, DotAsia is giving away one free 2GB mini USB stick for every new ".Asia" domain registered for 2 or more years with participating partners (http://www.freeb.asia/redemption/page?p=participate).

This is the first time a domain registry is giving out nifty tech gadgets for every domain registered.  With Asia being the undisputed region of gadgets, it is fitting that ".Asia"  is the first to offer such an unprecedented premium for the global domain community.

"It ties in well with the identity of the '.Asia' domain for a region known for its tech miniaturization savvy," says Edmon Chung, CEO of DotAsia.  "Besides being first of its kind, the offer also aligns with DotAsia's support for SMEs around the world to do business in Asia."

Alongside this amazing offer, DotAsia continues to build value for the ".Asia" namespace through community and market initiatives.  KeepClicking.Asia (http://www.keepclicking.asia) is a social platform inviting domain investors and SMEs to a dialogue about the growing Asian Internet marketplace; ListenUp.Asia (http://www.listenup.asia) is a podcast series about business, entertainment  and the Internet market in Asia; Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Award (APEA - http://www.apea.asia) recognises leaders for outstanding entrepreneurship and has an objective to stimulate the growth of Asian brands and enterprises.
