Prime Minister John Key has declared a state of emergency after the deadly earthquake that hit the city of Christchurch, killing around 75 people of which 55 have been identified. The toll from Tuesday's quake is expected to climb significantly as more bodies are found in the rubble. Video footage from the scenes have been very emotional indeed with people's faces being covered in blood and dust and other weeping over the loss of lives and property damage. The city has been devastated and there was a night without any electricity and water. It will take a while for the city to recover but what could be seen on television was incredible. People were putting their own lives at risk to go and help others who were trapped in the buildings. The Asian spirit will come through and Christchurch will come through this horrible event very soon. God bless the people there and our thoughts and prayers for people who have lost their loved ones.Image: Steve and Jemma Copley
As reported by CBS Sports, NBA superstar Steve Nash has ended his 15-year endorsement relationship with Nike, signing with Luyou. The 2-time MVP joins many other NBA players who have recently signed endorsement contracts with Chinese shoe makers. Kevin Garnett with ANTA, Baron Davis with Li-Ning, and recently, Jason Kidd and Ron Artest were scooped up by Peak.
With the evident globalization of the NBA, so too, are their players who are realizing that the local market in North America may just as well be tapped out. It is apparent that all business entities as well as in sport need to realize the riches that await in China and Asia.
2014 marks the year that China is projected to overtake Japan as the 2nd largest consumer economy. Years ago, the NBA, assisted by Yao Ming has transcended basketball into China well-knowing that this day will come and now the NBA brand, Steve Nash and Co. are staying ahead of the curve and reaping the benefits of that vision with their Chinese shoe contracts.
So, the Chinese shoe-makers have made their move and now let's see how and when the North American giants such as Nike, Adidas, and Reebok respond. If the automotive industry has taught a lesson, it's that the local giants shouldn't take foreign brand invasion lightly. Yes, Nike is a household name and nobody's every heard of Li-Ning, but way back when, Toyota probably sounded as foreign as Li-Ning, and who's laughing now?

Not so long ago, managers would look at Asian teams in the World cup and think it was a sure 3 points. Even in 2002, when South Korea reached the semi-finals, people thought it was only because of the fact the World Cup was staged there. Then Saudi Arabia were raped 8-0 by the Germans and people thought, yes same old story. It was considered a huge shock when an Asian team won and it would make the back and front pages of newspapers. Now times have changed dramatically. Teams have to dig deep and have some luck to beat the Asians. South Korea were unlucky not to get past Uruguay who had a wonder goal to thank and the Japanese were defeated on penalties. Australia, New Zealand were unlucky not to make it after some battling performances. North Korea even scored against Brazil.
Now Asians are going to be taken seriously in sports competitions. They have already made tremendous strides to become a future economic powerhouse, they have creativity here, the best products are made here in Asia, we have the largest number of online users. Now in sports events, we are making our mark too. Asia is truly becoming the main region.Image: sean in japan
