As the younger generation of internet users in Indonesia move into their adulthood, more online spending can be expected in the region in years to come. E-commerce in Indonesia could become mature in less than 10 years," Martin Hartono, the director of venture capital firm Global Digital Prima Ventures, told the Jakarta Globe on Sunday. Some factors include more disposable income for the community, more people starting their own business online and broadband internet becoming cheaper every year. The current broadband penetration rate is around 18% and it could be increased in the near future with more government investments to let more of the population come online.  Jakarta-based GDP Ventures has embarked on a series of acquisitions and initiatives to widen its presence. It has identified three divisions as its main pillars for online business -- a forum that allows people to buy and sell goods, a company that nurtures start-ups and an e-commerce site.

About 60 percent of Indonesians are younger than 39, and about half are below 29. This demographic profile, which could be maintained for the next decade, has attracted many companies, both foreign and local, seeking to develop e-commerce businesses in Indonesia. Asian countries are developing very fast and it is not only China and India where the investment opportunities exists. Indonesia very soon will be a great market, full of people online with money to spend too. Their penetration rate is still quite low compared to more developed nations all over the world so definitely a region to keep tabs on.
